This privacy policy explains how Idabyte Ltd (“Idabyte”, “we”, “us”) collects and uses personal data when you visit idabyte.co.uk or contact us. We comply with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

1. Who we are

Idabyte Ltd is a UK software engineering company registered in England and Wales. We are the data controller for the personal data described below.

2. Personal data we collect

This website is a static information site. It does not run tracking pixels or advertising scripts. It runs one analytics tool, Microsoft Clarity, on the homepage, the case study pages and the Word Wise pages, and only if you allow it. We may receive personal data in the following situations:

  • When you contact us by email, phone or LinkedIn: your name, contact details and the contents of your message.
  • Server access logs kept by our hosting provider: typically your IP address, browser user-agent and the timestamp of each request. These logs are used for security and abuse prevention and are retained for a limited period in line with our hosting provider’s defaults.
  • Analytics, if you allow it: Microsoft Clarity records how you use the homepage, the case study pages and the Word Wise pages, such as clicks, scrolling and mouse movement, as heatmaps and session recordings. It also records details of your browser and device.

3. How we use your data

We use the personal data you provide to:

  • Respond to your enquiry or follow up on a piece of work;
  • Provide the services you have engaged us for;
  • Keep records required for legal, accounting or contractual obligations;
  • See how visitors use this website so we can improve it, if you allow analytics;
  • Operate, secure and maintain this website.

4. Lawful basis

We process your personal data on one or more of the following lawful bases under UK GDPR Article 6:

  • Legitimate interests — responding to your enquiry, maintaining server security, and conducting our business as a software engineering company.
  • Performance of a contract — delivering services we have agreed with you.
  • Legal obligation — complying with HMRC, Companies House and other UK regulatory requirements.
  • Consent — analytics with Microsoft Clarity. You can withdraw consent at any time with the “Cookie settings” link at the foot of the homepage, each case study and each Word Wise page.

5. Cookies

This website sets cookies only if you allow analytics. If you do, Microsoft Clarity sets two cookies: _clck, which recognises your browser on later visits, and _clsk, which links your page views into one visit. Microsoft lists every Clarity cookie on its cookie page.

Microsoft receives this data as an independent controller. It may use the data for its own purposes, including advertising, as the Microsoft Privacy Statement explains. We tell Clarity not to set its advertising cookies.

Your choice is saved in your browser’s local storage for six months, so we don’t ask on every page. You can change it at any time with the “Cookie settings” link at the foot of the homepage, each case study and each Word Wise page. Apart from Clarity, everything on this site, including its fonts, is served from idabyte.co.uk.

6. Third parties

We do not sell or rent personal data. We may share data only with:

  • Our hosting provider, who processes server logs on our behalf;
  • Microsoft, which provides Clarity analytics if you allow it and receives the data as an independent controller. Microsoft may process it outside the UK, including in the United States;
  • Professional advisers (accountants, legal advisers) where required;
  • Law enforcement or regulators where we are legally required to do so.

7. Data retention

We retain personal data only for as long as it is needed for the purposes set out above, or for the duration of any legal, accounting or contractual obligation. Email correspondence is typically retained for the length of the engagement plus six years for tax record-keeping. Clarity keeps recordings for 30 days, and heatmaps, summary data and saved recordings for 9 months.

8. Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to:

  • Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
  • Have inaccurate data corrected;
  • Have your data erased where we have no continuing legal basis to retain it;
  • Restrict or object to processing;
  • Receive your data in a portable format;
  • Withdraw your consent to analytics at any time.

To exercise any of these rights, email contact@idabyte.co.uk. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK’s data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent change.

On 23 September 2026 we started asking for permission before loading Microsoft Clarity. From April 2026 until then, the homepage and the Word Wise pages loaded it without asking, and this policy did not mention it.
