Word Wise — Privacy Policy

Effective date: 29 April 2026 · Last updated: 5 August 2026

The short version: Word Wise is a vocabulary learning app for tweens. There are no accounts, no advertising, no behavioural tracking, and nothing is ever sold or shared. Your learning progress stays on your device. The one thing the app does send is an anonymous crash and error report when something goes wrong, so we can fix it — described in full in section 4.

1. Who we are

Word Wise is published by Idabyte Ltd ("Idabyte", "we", "us", "our"), a company registered in England and Wales. This privacy policy explains how the Word Wise iOS app handles information.

If you have any questions, you can contact us at contact@idabyte.co.uk.

2. Information we collect

We do not collect personal information about you or your child. Specifically:

The one exception is anonymous crash and error diagnostics, which are described in section 4. These contain no personal information, but they do include a random identifier for the app installation, so we treat them carefully and explain them in full below.

3. Information stored on your device

Word Wise stores your learning progress — such as vocabulary you have practised, your XP, streaks, levels, badges, Word Coins, and reading position — locally on your device. This information stays on your iPhone or iPad. It is never transmitted to Idabyte or to anyone else.

If you delete the app, this information is deleted along with it.

4. Crash and error diagnostics

When the app crashes or hits an unexpected error, it sends a diagnostic report so we can find and fix the problem. This is the only information the app transmits.

What a report contains

What a report never contains

How it is handled

Diagnostics are processed on our behalf by Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.), which acts as our data processor under contract. Reports are sent to Sentry's European Union data region and are retained for a limited period before automatic deletion. The number of reports is capped per session, so a repeating fault cannot generate a flood of data.

Diagnostics are only active in the released App Store version of the app. Our lawful basis under UK and EU GDPR is our legitimate interest in keeping the app working correctly and safely for the children who use it; we have kept the data to the minimum needed for that purpose. If you would prefer your installation's diagnostics not to be used, contact us at contact@idabyte.co.uk and we will delete the reports associated with it.

5. Purchases

Word Wise offers two optional one-time in-app purchases: a book bundle and an exam bundle. Neither is a subscription and neither renews.

All payments are handled entirely by Apple through In-App Purchase. Idabyte never sees your payment details. Apple confirms to the app that a purchase succeeded, and the app unlocks the content. Purchases are governed by Apple's own privacy policy.

Buying and restoring purchases sit behind a grown-up check, so a child cannot start a purchase on their own.

6. Children's privacy

Word Wise is designed for children aged 11 to 13 and is offered in Apple's Kids Category. We have built the app with children's privacy as the starting point, and we design it to meet:

In practice this means the app contains no third-party advertising, no behavioural advertising, no profiling, no social features, and no user-generated content. Nothing a child does in the app is used to build a profile of them, and nothing they do is shared with anyone.

The only data that leaves the device is the anonymous crash diagnostics described in section 4, which exist solely so we can fix faults. They carry no personal information and are not used for analytics, advertising, measurement, or any commercial purpose.

7. Third-party services

Word Wise integrates with no social networks, advertising platforms, or data brokers. The complete list of third parties involved is:

If we ever introduce features that require further data processing, we will update this policy and explain the change before those features become available.

8. Your rights

Under UK GDPR and EU GDPR you have rights including the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of personal data, and to object to processing carried out on the basis of legitimate interests.

Because we hold no accounts and no personal profiles, there is usually nothing for us to look up. Your learning data is on your device and you can erase all of it at any time by deleting the app. For crash diagnostics, contact us at contact@idabyte.co.uk and we will delete the reports associated with your installation.

If you believe your rights have been breached, you can contact the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or your local data protection authority.

9. Security

Because your learning data stays on your device, security is largely provided by Apple's built-in iOS protections, including device-level encryption when your device is locked. Diagnostic reports are sent over an encrypted connection. We recommend keeping your device's operating system up to date and using a passcode.

10. International users

Word Wise is available worldwide on the App Store. Your learning data never leaves your device, so it is never transferred anywhere. Crash diagnostics are sent to Sentry's European Union data region. Where any onward transfer outside the UK or EEA occurs, it is covered by the safeguards in our contract with Sentry, including the UK International Data Transfer Addendum and the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time, for example if we add features that handle data differently. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. If changes are material, we will provide additional notice within the app or on this page.

Change on 5 August 2026: this policy was updated to describe the anonymous crash and error diagnostics added in version 2.0 of the app, and to list the in-app purchases and the third parties involved. An earlier version of this page stated that the app transmitted nothing at all, which no longer reflected how the app worked.
